What Is Smokeless Tobacco?

Smokeless tobacco, also called spit tobacco, chewing tobacco, chew, chaw, dip, plug, and probably a few other things, comes in two forms: snuff and chewing tobacco.
Smokless tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking.



Who Chews?

About 20% of high school boys and 2% of high school girls use smokeless tobacco. There are around 12 to 14 million Americans chew, and 1/3 of those people are under the age of 21.

Some Ingredients in Smokeless Tobacco


  • Polonium 210 (nuclear waste)
  • Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
  • Cadmium (used in car batteries)
  • Lead (nerve poison)
  • Nitrosamines (cancer causing substances)
  • Arsenic
  • Cyanide

Oral Cancer
An estimated 28,260 new cases of oral cancer are reported in the United States yearly. An estimated 7,230 deaths occur from oral cancer.

Smokeless tobacco (also known as chewing tobacco) is tobacco that you put in your mouth and suck on.







Effects of Chewing Tobacco
Cracking and bleeding lips and gums
Receding gums that can make your teeth fall out
Increased heart rate and blood pressure that can put you at greater risk for heart attack or stroke
Cancer
Stained teeth
Bad Breath
Leukoplakia- "thickened, white, leathery appearing spots that can develop into cancer of the mouth" (Miss Allie)

Smokeless Tobacco is just as bad for you as smoking cigarettes.
Side Effects of dipping include: Cracking and bleeding gums and teeth, receding gums, your teeth falling out, increased heart rate and blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, cancer, stained teeth, and bad breath.
Not to Mention all of the money you will spend on the products.
